CMEP writes President Bush on Loan Guarantee Reduction

~September 23, 2003~

September 23, 2003 (printed on Churches for Middle East Peace letterhead)

The Honorable George W. Bush

President of the United States of America

The White House

Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President:

We implore your continued leadership to restore hope and press both parties to implement the Road Map peace plan. In particular, Churches for Middle East Peace commends your decision to reduce loan guarantees to Israel based on its continued expansion of, and expenditures on, settlements.  Without additional sustained, firm directives and concrete actions by your Administration, the loan guarantee reduction will be seen as merely symbolic. The Government of Israel and the U.S. Congress must be convinced that you are dedicated to the evenhanded implementation of the Road Map, and that you will use financial disincentives as necessary.

Despite your requests, Prime Minister Sharon’s government continues to expand and maintain settlements and is shaping plans to do so into the future.  Currently, the most disturbing example of Israel’s continued seizure of Palestinian land and water resources is its building of a formidable wall.  According to Israeli sources, 85% of the land taken for this so-called “security fence” has been seized from Palestinians. The damage done by this wall is compounded by the intent of Israel to accommodate the settlements in addition to serving security needs.

You, Mr. President, may be the last American leader who actually will have the opportunity to lead Israelis and Palestinians toward fulfillment of the two-state vision. This is the solution to the conflict embodied in UN Security Council resolutions, supported by the international community, and wisely sought by you. Unless you act soon and with resolute strength of purpose, the window of opportunity for a peaceful, two-state resolution to this deadly crisis may quickly close.

Sincerely,

Jeanette Holt
