About CMEP's Work on the Hill

Churches for Middle East Peace is the only ecumenical Christian peacemaking organization that engages directly in advocacy and education with the U.S. Congress.  The CMEP Board and Staff communicate with Senate and House offices on a regular basis to further the policy positions of the CMEP coalition, including a peaceful resolution of conflicts and crises in the region, particularly a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict, where Israel and Palestine live side-by-side within secure and recognized borders. CMEP's Washington office works together with church leaders, clergy and advocates around the country to amplify our message of support for constructive U.S. policies conducive to Middle East peace.

On the Hill 2006-2008

On the Hill in 2009

CMEP supports Inglis-Moran sign on letter. Representatives Inglis (R-SC-4) and Moran (D-VA-8) partner on a bi-partisan letter to Secretary Clinton asking her to ensure that students from Gaza have access to higher education. The letter requests "an effective mechanism to evaluate and approve requests for Gaza residents to study in the West Bank in a timely manner."

CMEP supports McDermott-Ellison sign on letter.  Representatives McDermott (D-WA-7) and Ellison (D-MN-5) are circulating a "Dear Colleague" letter in the House of Representatives asking Members of Congress to join them in sending a letter to President Obama regarding the ongoing crisis in Gaza. The letter to the President acknowledges that the "Israeli government has imposed restrictions on Gaza out of legitimate and keenly felt fear of continued terrorist action...", but notes that "all the peoples of the region, must see that the United States is dedicated to addressing the legitimate security needs of the State of Israel and to ensuring that the legitimate needs of the Palestinian population are met."

CMEP opposes House Resolution 867.  Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen (R-18th/FL) introduced a resolution "Calling on the President and the Secretary of State to oppose unequivocally any endorsement or further consideration of the 'Report of the United Nations Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict.'" The resolution raises concerns about the "one-sided" nature of the Goldstone Report, while simultaneously ignoring the credible claims of misconduct raised by the civilian population in Gaza and by Israelis who have legitimate questions about their country's conduct in Gaza. View the letter Justice Goldstone sent to the House Foreign Affairs Chairman Berman (D-CA) and Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen (R-18th/FL) expressing his "strong reservations" about H. Res. 867 because the text of the resolution "includes serious factual inaccuracies." View the final vote results.

CMEP opposes sign-on letter led by Senators Bayh and Risch.  Senators Evan Bayh (D-IN) and James Risch (R-ID) organized a letter to President Obama which stressed the need for Arab states to make “dramatic gestures toward Israel” without mentioning any obligation of Israel to stop the expansion of settlements in Palestinian territories. The Bayh-Risch letter rightly urges the President to engage Arab states, but it unwisely ignores the harmful effects of continued settlement expansion on the peace process. View the letter to President Obama.

CMEP's 2009 Annual Advocacy Conference drew over 170 church advocates and clergy from around the country June 7-9 for fellowship, study, prayer and advocacy on behalf of peace in the Holy Land. "Israeli-Palestinian Peace: Hope for Things Unseen" was the theme of the conference that sought to build support in Congress for the Obama Administration's efforts to achieve a two-state solution, while giving witness to the challenges and struggles on the ground in the Holy Land. Advocates held over 75 visits with their Senators, Representative and staff.  View the conference advocacy message.  View the videos of CMEP's 2nd Annual Congressional Prayer Breakfast for Peace in the Holy Land which included remarks by Representatives Betty McCollum (D-MN), Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE),  Bill Delahunt (D-MA) and Lois Capps (D-CA).  (June)

CMEP urges support for Cohen-Boustany-Carnahan letter in support of President's Obama's Middle East Peace Policy.  View the CMEP message to Congressional staff, the full letter and final list of signers.  (May)

CMEP applauds House Resolution 282 on the 30th Anniversary of Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty.  The resolution, introduced by Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE) and Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), commended "the extraordinary diplomatic achievement that the treaty exemplifies."  View the full text of the resolution and full list of signers.  (April)

CMEP urges support for a sign-on letter led by Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) in support of the Obama Administration's Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts. The letter was written on the occasion of Secretary of State Clinton's first trip to the Middle East as Secretary of State and urged her to make the most of her visit to further peace efforts.  View list of signers.  (February)

CMEP supports House resolution backing Middle East Envoy. Congressman Bill Delahunt (D-MA) and 104 other members – a diverse group of Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Arab-American Representatives, Democrat and Republican – joined together to introduce H. Res. 130 expressing support for the appointment of former Senator

George Mitchell as Special Envoy for Middle East Peace.  CMEP sent a message to all House staff in support of the resolution.  View list of co-sponsors.  (July)

CMEP sent greetings to the 111th Congress and a 2009 Policy Guide for Middle East issues. (February)

CMEP Supports House Letter on Gaza Humanitarian Crisis.  A group of House members organized a letter to Secretary of State Clinton expressing "deep concern for the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and to request immediate action by the United States to address this crisis."  View the letter and full list of signers (January)

CMEP was heard when Congress passed Gaza Resolutions.  The mid-January House and Senate resolutions called for a "durable" and "sustainable" cease-fire "as soon as possible," a significant development given that earlier that week Congressional leaders had said a "cease-fire" would not be demanded at all.  These resolutions included key positive clauses particularly on the need for a a resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, however in sum they failed to represent a complete or adequate response to the Gaza crisis.  View all Congressional action on the Gaza crisis (January)

CMEP urges Congress to support US Efforts to achieve an immediate cease-fire in Gaza and Southern Israel in early January 2009. CMEP pushed for urgent humanitarian measures and renewed political processes necessary for a durable peace with legislators.   View the message sent to all Congressional staff. (January)
