Churches for Middle East Peace has heard
some exciting news--the
Feinstein/Lugar resolution on
Israeli-Palestinian peace is moving and
may be voted on sometime this week!
This bi-partisan, pro-peace resolution
is an important show of the Senate’s
support for active U.S. diplomacy to
achieve a two-state solution.
First introduced on June 7th
with 8 co-sponsors joining Senator
Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), the lead
sponsor, 21 Senators have now signed on
to the resolution. The text has
been changed slightly to reflect the
current crisis with the Hamas takeover
of Gaza and it is expected that the
resolution will be re-introduced with a
new number before it is voted on.
The Feinstein/Lugar resolution comes at
a crucial time when peacemaking efforts
are urgently needed. CMEP is joined in
supporting the resolution by a number of
Jewish and Arab-American groups
including: Americans for Peace Now, Brit
Tzedek v’Shalom, the Israel Policy
Forum, the Arab American Institute and
the American Taskforce on Palestine.
Your call today can demonstrate the
broad support among Americans for U.S.
leadership to realize the two-state
vision of a viable Palestinian state
living in peace alongside a secure
Israel.

Talking Points:
Please co-sponsor the updated version of
S. Res. 224, the Feinstein/Lugar
resolution in support of
Israeli-Palestinian peace.
(or thank them if they are already
co-sponsors.)
The
resolution
reaffirms the Senate’s commitment to a
two-state solution, calls on President
Bush to pursue a robust diplomatic
effort and urges Israeli and Palestinian
leaders to work toward peace.
As an American Christian, I support
serious and sustained U.S. engagement to
help resolve the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict with Israel living in peace and
security alongside a viable and
contiguous Palestinian state.
Vigorous and persistent
U.S.
engagement in the peace process is in
the best interests of the United States,
Israel, the Palestinians and the wider
region.
While the recent events in Gaza
seriously complicate efforts at
peacemaking, I believe that it is even
more urgent to provide hope for Israelis
and Palestinians that peace is
possible and to demonstrate that the
U.S. is firmly committed to realizing
the two-state vision.
