With the relaunching of the Arab League Peace Initiative, CMEP's
advocacy to promote a shared city is both timely and necessary.
The guidance that CMEP provides to church members and
congregations across the nation, combined with its work in
Washington, has never been more important. Please consider making
a generous contribution to help fund CMEP's work. The following
appeal mailing has already been received by those of you on our
mailing list and I hope this note reminds you to send a
contribution today by mail or through secure, online credit card
service on CMEP's website.
Included in this mailing was a list of
2006 CMEP donors,
as well as a new
Jerusalem advocacy card, which will be distributed at CMEP's
May 6- 8 Conference, "For the Peace of Jerusalem".
If you receive only CMEP's Email Network messages, either directly
or from a friend, I ask you to become a contributor. We need, and
appreciate, your donation.
Thank you,
Corinne Whitlatch

For the Peace of Jerusalem
May 6-8, 2007 - Washington, DC
April 2007
Dear Friends,
It was on Ash Wednesday as I was preparing materials for
Congressional meetings that I thought of you. As I collated and
stapled a recent message from the Patriarchs and Bishops of
Jerusalem, I was reminded that Christians everywhere will turn
their thoughts and prayers this Lenten season to the Holy City of
Jerusalem.
In their message, the Christian leaders in Jerusalem wrote, "We
consider it part of our duty to draw the attention of the local
authorities, as well as the international community and the world
Churches, to this very grave situation and call for a concerted
vision on the status of this holy city based on international
resolutions and having regard to the rights of two peoples in her
and the three faith communities."
The situation today is, indeed, very grave. Jerusalem has been
called the volcanic core of the Arab-Israeli conflict
because of the profound religious meaning it holds for Jews,
Christians, and Muslims everywhere.
With the construction of the separation wall, many Christians
and Muslims are excluded from the city and its holy sites.
Without Jerusalem as its beating heart, a Palestinian state cannot
be viable. Without the promise of Jerusalem being the capitals of
both Israel and Palestine, the conflict cannot be resolved – there
will be no peace.
. Churches for Middle East Peace is taking the call for a shared
Jerusalem directly to Congress. We are guiding clergy and members
of our churches in effective advocacy for the sharing of
Jerusalem, an end of the occupation, and peace between two states
– Israel and Palestine. Our mission is peace.
CMEP’s considerable experience with both Congress and the White
House opens doors and opens minds. But, during this critical time,
we MUST do more. I hope you will help us continue our work for
peace with a generous contribution today. Your support is
greatly needed!
When things get hot in Jerusalem, CMEP’s response is swift and
always directed to people who can make a difference.
In February, Israel began excavations near the Western Wall at the
base of the Haram al-Sharif and protests erupted – in the streets
of the Old City and from Ambassadors at the United Nations. CMEP
immediately contacted David Welch, the Assistant Secretary of
State for the Near East, who had met with us in the past.
We asked Mr. Welch to convince Israel to halt the excavations
and urged him to strongly assert the long-held policy of the
United States that the status of Jerusalem must be determined by a
negotiated agreement and that neither party should take actions
that would prejudge the outcome of negotiations.
I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re fed up with Israelis and
Palestinians and the whole Middle East. Like me, you may feel
overwhelmed and frustrated by the daily bad news coming from Iraq
and disgusted by the political mudslinging.
But, I have to write you today, because in the midst of all
this overload is a peace effort – the call for sharing Jerusalem -
that can make a difference. Regardless of our individual
political leanings, our commitment to peace compels us to take
action as citizen constituents. The U.S. government does, and will
continue to, play a central role in Middle East affairs.
We must do all we can to make sure that the U.S. role is
constructive and leads to peace.
And frankly, if we don’t have your support, the Churches’ call
for a shared Jerusalem – for peace – will be lost in the political
shuffle. I hope I have your support, because the situation in
Jerusalem is dire and the possibility of a shared Jerusalem and
two-states is nearing the point of no return.
CMEP’s agenda for 2007 is strong and ambitious:
1. CMEP is organizing "For the Peace of Jerusalem," a national
conference on Jerusalem that will also prepare clergy and church
members for advocacy with Congress and at home. (You will find
more about this May 6-8 conference at
www.cmep.org
) We look forward to the wonderful energy that
radiates when people of peace come together.
2. CMEP is working with like- minded peace groups to confront
politics in Congress and initiate a major congressional resolution
that constructively recognizes the 40th anniversary of the June
1967 war as the time for a diplomatic surge for justice and peace
that will end the occupation and bring security to Israel. This
resolution will be a welcome counter to the anticipated resolution
celebrating Israel’s "reunification" of Jerusalem.
3. CMEP is continuing to relentlessly press the Administration
and Members of Congress for action on the Iraq Study Group’s
advice that the United States act boldly and deal directly with
the Arab-Israeli conflict with a renewed and sustained commitment.
The ISG report gives a terrific boost to CMEP’s advocacy of
"land for peace."
With new Congressional leadership and escalating public concern
about Iraq, the President and Secretary Rice are under great
pressure to adopt a new approach to the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict. There is now talk of a "political horizon" that will
allow a clear picture of what a two-state solution would look
like. It’s widely agreed, even though not spoken aloud by our
elected officials, that a two-state solution must involve the
sharing of Jerusalem.
When we work together, our voice is louder, stronger, and heard
in the halls of Congress and at the White House. And, your
continued and committed support of CMEP has never been more
important.
How are you able to help end the occupation and bring peace and
security to Palestinians and Israelis?
First, be an advocate and enlist others. I have enclosed a card
with general advocacy tips and talking points for advocacy of
sharing Jerusalem to help you.
And, I hope you will also be generous. Your financial support
makes CMEP’s peace efforts possible. And, during this time of
unrest and violence in the Middle East – and a growing sense of
frustration here at home – your help is vitally needed.
The demand for a shared Jerusalem must continue. We
must lift advocacy for a shared Jerusalem above the noise of
mudslinging and politics. The call for a shared Jerusalem must
be heard. The sharing of Jerusalem IS possible.
Please stay with us as we work for peace in Jerusalem and a better
future for those who hold it holy.
Thank you for your continued support and prayers.
Sincerely,
Corinne Whitlatch

P.S. I recently received a copy of a letter that Bill George, a
Baptist and pastoral counselor in South Carolina, sent to his
Representative recommending a meeting with CMEP. In it, Bill
wrote:
"I have been so encouraged by this organization. They give a
prophetic and holy voice in the midst of anger, fear, suffering
and violence. There is no more important place in the world for
peacemaking than in the Middle East, and there is no more
important voice to learn from than these voices."
I am delighted to offer a wonderful educational resource.
“Searching for Peace in the Middle East” is a short film by
Landrum Bolling and provided to CMEP by the Foundation for Middle
East Peace. Included with the DVD is an excellent booklet with a
concise history of the conflict and peacemaking. The Foundation’s
President Philip Wilcox and Landrum Bolling are members of CMEP’s
Leadership Council.
