Lincoln Chafee to Speak at CMEP Conference
~April 17, 2007~
I am delighted to let you know that former Rhode Island Senator Lincoln
Chafee will speak on the topic "American Credibility in the Middle
East" at the CMEP conference, "For the Peace of Jerusalem," on Monday,
May 7. Sen. Chafee served as chairman of the Near Eastern and South Asian
Affairs subcommittee of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. His
continued leadership and deep concern about the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict is greatly appreciated by CMEP.
I encourage you to attend and promote this extraordinary conference that
CMEP is organizing on May 6,7,8 in Washington DC that will provide an in-
depth learning experience on the complicated issues related to the status
of Jerusalem, which, as you know, is a "final status" issue for
Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. This conference will begin with a Sunday
evening worship service (that is open to the public) on the peace of
Jerusalem featuring prominent leaders of the three Christian traditions in
Jerusalem - Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant. Denis Madden, the Auxiliary
Bishop of Baltimore will give the homily, along with Armenian Archbishop
Aykazian and Rt. Rev. Griswold, retired Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal
Church.
Also featured at this conference are Israeli and
Palestinian negotiators of the Geneva Accords, Daniel
Levy and Ghaith Al-Omari. Workshop presenters include
Amb. Philip Wilcox on US policy on Jerusalem and Tom
Garafalo, the Jerusalem representative of Catholic
Relief Services on the Humanitarian Situation of
Palestinians as well as experts on Catholic, Jewish
and Palestinian perspectives on Jerusalem's status.
There will also be workshops for newcomers to
Israeli-Palestinian peace advocacy and related to
engaging congregations. We are working on getting a
top US diplomat as the luncheon speaker and will keep
you informed. Conference participants will be trained
for advocacy and assisted in making appointments with
their Senators and Representative on Tuesday morning.
Below are links to the conference flier and a current schedule of the
program, and useful for those in the Washington Metro area, text for a
bulletin insert on the public Sunday worship service.
Information about the program, conference registration and lodging
suggestions, are available on the
conference main page.
