This is the season
when many protestant denominations hold national gatherings to
consider policy and to issue statements. The 2004 United Methodist
General Conference, meeting in Pittsburgh April 26-May 7, passed a
“Resolution on Peace in the
Middle East.”
The United Methodist
General Board of Church and Society’s Executive Secretary Jim Winkler
is on the board of CMEP and is deeply engaged in Middle East issues.
In a recent speech to
Methodists in
Nebraska, Jim
talks about the Iraq war and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and
what’s wrong with US policy and what United Methodists should do about
it. Jim mentions his meeting with Secretary of State Powell as part
of a delegation of religious leaders. The list of the
national
religious leaders and their statement to Sec. Powell is
posted, as are the other documents,
www.cmep.org in the “Statement” menu selection.
Statements and
other resolutions from the national churches will be posted on the
website as they become available. |
