Email Action Alert

Advocacy on the Separation Wall

~September 2, 2003~

On July 21 and August 5, you received emails from Churches for Middle East Peace that dealt with the separation wall/fence.  The wall has increasingly become an important and volatile subject in Congress.  Following reports that the Administration was considering reducing loan guarantees for Israel in an effort to halt construction of the fence, thirty House members signed a letter opposing such thought.  The Aug. 6th letter, drafted by Congresswoman Lowey (D-NY), says, “the U.S. must never pressure Israel” to take such an action.  The letter and list of signers can be viewed at Lowey’s website: http://www.house.gov/lowey/20030806b.htm . The list of signers is also at the bottom of this message.  A similar letter among Senators was initiated by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY).  Schumer wrote that any move to halt construction of the West Bank fence would interfere with Israel’s right to defend itself from terror.

During recess, over sixty members of Congress embarked on Aipac-endorsed trips to Israel and many now view the wall as “necessary” and a “good thing” for Israel’s security. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), who was part of a delegation to Israel, said, “Many in Congress feel the fence is an important contributor to preventing acts of terror” and the wall’s route should “absolutely not” be linked to loan guarantees. If your Congressional representative was one of those who went on a trip to Israel, your call is especially important. A list of those who went to the region can be found at the bottom of this email.

ACTION:

  • As outlined in our July 29 email to you, preparing a brief letter-to-the-editor or participating constructively in a talk radio show is a good way to educate people.
  • Call your Senators’ and Representative’s offices with this message:  “Please help the President stop Israel’s building of a Separation Wall on West Bank land, even if this requires financial pressure. The leaders of Christian churches in Bethlehem write that the Separation Wall’s consequences will be devastating to the Christian Community.” The Capitol switchboard will connect you:  Senate 202-224-3121; House 202-225-3121
  • Another appropriate action is to call the White House comment line (202-456-1111) and encourage them to continue implementing the Road Map by taking necessary steps (including even reducing financial aid) to stop Israel from building this “fence” on Palestinian land.

RESOURCES: Many church leaders are speaking out against the construction of the wall.  Attached you will find a bulletin insert prepared by the Mennonite Central Committee. The insert is also on our website at: http://www.cmep.org/documents/bulletininsert.pdf.   Feel free to adapt this insert for your churches. Also, the Heads of Churches in Jerusalem recently wrote a statement about the separation wall, and appealed to all leaders “to remove this impediment to a comprehensive and lasting peace.”   The text of the message with the signers follows.  The actual letter is found on our website at: http://www.cmep.org/Statements/2003Aug28.htm

 STATEMENT regarding the Separation Wall

We the Heads of Churches in Jerusalem affirm our determination to do all in our power to work for Peace in this Holy Land -- a Peace that is concerned with the well-being of every resident of this Land, be they Israeli or Palestinian, to give them security, justice, freedom, independence and personal dignity.

Let no-one doubt our abhorrence of violence, whoever the perpetrator.  Peace will only be established when all violence is eradicated from both sides.  If the present Road Map for Peace is to bring positive results, we believe the Separation Wall constitutes a grave obstacle.  For both nations the Wall will result in a feeling of isolation.  Moreover for many Palestinians it means the deprivation of land, (some 10% more than that of the Occupation in 1967), livelihood, statehood and family life.  Occupation remains the root cause of the conflict and of the continuing suffering in the Holy Land.

Take for example the proposed Separation Wall around Bethlehem, for us Christians, the birthplace of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace.  The consequences will be devastating to the Christian Community; not least the psychological impact on daily life.  The community will be isolated following the deprivation of access to land and freedom of movement.  Visits of pilgrims will be further discouraged.

We appeal to both Authorities -- Israeli and Palestinian -- and to all Peace-loving peoples around the world, (who should make urgent contact with their leaders, both Political and Religious), in an effort to remove this impediment to a comprehensive and lasting Peace.
